King Cakes, Crawfish, and Po'Boys
Here are a few things I have simply not been able to stop thinking about. None of these items or events are sponsoring me.
King Cake
Mardi Gras would not be Mardi Gras without King Cakes. To me, it brings back memories of home.
It is a New Orleans tradition to place a baby inside the cake. The person who finds the baby is crowned King or Queen for the day and they are to host the next King Cake party. R. got the baby while we were visiting my mom in December so now we are obligated to buy another King Cake. Sounds like solid reasoning to me.
The cakes made their way to New Orleans in the 1870's when French settlers celebrated the coming of the Three Wise Men (King's Day). The purple icing represents Justice, green is for Faith, and gold is Power.
Personally, I think the cakes are very labor intensive to make and prefer to buy them. Plus, I could never make one as good as Randazzos or McKenzies. Nonna Randazzo's makes the best and they will ship them. I have eaten 2 this year and still long for another.
Crawfish!!
Oh how I long for crawfish! I can't seem to find the "real thing"
here in Florida

Crawfish!!

I see them for about 11 dollars a pound (when I left N.O. they were about 3 dollars a pound) and they are not seasoned right.
A badly seasoned crawfish is gross!
I hope to boil my own this year but I better get busy before the season
is over.
Shrimp Po'Boy
This, I should be able to find here. I hope.
Louisiana Jazz Fest
The Jazz Fest is April 29-May 8 in New Orleans. Every time I have gone to the Jazz Fest it has been hot and muddy and stinky but now that I may not be able to go, it is suddenly something to miss desperately. I am hoping to make it this year.
I could keep going. I suddenly have thought about oysters, The Acme Oyster House, my friends that I have not seen in forever. I better stop before I jump in my car and take off for New Orleans.
Mmmm...crawfish.The Jazz festival sounds great,I love Michael Franti :) I followed you from the foodie blog roll and I'd love to guide Foodista readers to your site. I hope you could add this crawfish widget at the end of this post so we could add you in our list of food bloggers who blogged about crawfish,Thanks!
