Persistence and Fundamentals

Persistence and Fundamentals.

Two big words you might as well embrace if you want to achieve anything in life, whether that be a life goal, a running goal, or any other type of goal.

These two will haunt you, pursue you, taunt you, torture you, lie in bed with you at night...might as well get used to it.  You need them, like it or not...

They tend to be boring and frustrating--especially when you need them the most, but a little bit of coddling and these two can be your best friend.  They have the potential to bring you anything you want in life if you know how to work them.

Persistence and Fundamentals In Life

Life has a way of broadsiding you when you least expect it.   And if you are purposely trying to make a change, you can bet your granny's pantaloons you will be taking several steps back for every step forward.  That's the way life is...fickle like that.   There is a way to beat it though...

Introduce yourself to Persistence.  Persistence finds a way around or through all obstacles.  How many times have you heard of the guy or gal who gave up only to find that if they had stuck it out for just one more day, or one more time, they would have accomplished the grand goal they were going for.  Align yourself with Persistence and never give up.  Change your strategy if you have to (and you will often have to change strategy), but never give up.

And then there is Fundamentals.  The basics.  You can't master anything in life if you don't have the basics down.  When you find you can't move forward anymore...go back to the basics.  Make nice with Fundamentals.  Make sure you have mastered them and going forward will be so much easier.

How does this apply to real life?

After the company I worked for went bankrupt in March of last year, I could not find a decent job.  I wasn't even asking for great--just decent.

I got a job with a man who was convinced (erroneously) that the only reason I was working for him was because I wanted to have sex with him.  I withstood 5-1/2 months of unbelievable sexual harassment before I walked out of that one.

Then I got a job with a selfish bitch who tried to screw over every single person she dealt with including me.  I lasted 2 weeks on that one.

The unemployment rate in Hernando County is 15%.  Those who are hiring know everyone needs a job and even their ads show an unwillingness to treat their employees like humans.  There's just not much chance of getting a good job here, and I can't move.

So.....I have decided to take matters in my own little hands and start a commercial writing business.  It's something I really wanted to do...and at this point...I can't go anywhere but up.  It isn't like I can get any more financially unstable and I certainly can't be a worse boss than what I have had this past year.

There are 2 ultra-important things I need to keep in mind to make this work.

I need Persistence.  I need to get back on my feet and keep at it no matter how many times I get rejected.  I have to persist, persist, persist...until I get what I want.  I have to focus on action every day and not get lost in fear.  The person who succeeds is the person who is not afraid to fail.  This is easier for me to say than do.  I can, and will, change strategies but I can't quit or give up.

I need Fundamentals.  I need to know what I'm doing and the best way to do this is to practice the fundamentals until they are burned into my brain...and that's what I do, day in and day out.  I study marketing techniques, writing techniques.  I practice, practice, practice.  I have to master the fundamentals.  I study, practice and repeat.  Once I get a client, I will have the fundamentals burned into my brain. I hope.

Persistence and Fundamentals In Running

I also have noticed that when my life gets crazy my running goes to pot.   So I reach again for Persistence and Fundamentals.

I was planning to run Disney's Half Marathon in September...

...but...I've gotten very slow and very inconsistent.  I could not run a decent 5K right now.

Persistence is self-explanatory.  I won't quit.  I will just keep plugging away with my bad, slow self.

Fundamentals mean purposely going back instead of moving forward.  I can't train for a half-marathon until I get good at a 5K.  I have changed my training from attempting to run 5 miles at a time to running a faster, better 1 mile.  I am starting over and practicing the fundamentals to run a faster 5K in order to become better at a half marathon.  I am also really focused on strengthening my abs.

They aren't very glamorous but Persistence and Fundamentals are the key to a better future...no matter what you are hoping that future to be.

What areas of your life have you had to introduce Persistence and Fundamentals to?

  1. This is so true. Those two things have gotten me through quite a few seasons of rowing, and some weight loss, and quite a few classes. This is a remarkably insightful summary of how to succeed at a lot of things.
